Program

Description

Our dynamic Sports and Health Volunteer Program at Highridge School, is a project that focuses on improving children's health and sports knowledge in a fun and creative manner. As a volunteer, your main role is to teach various sports and deliver health classes, shaping a dedicated sports program and curriculum for Kinder to Year 12 students.

Collaborate with the school staff to implement health and wellbeing lessons, organize sports events and carnivals, raise awareness about health, and establish a comprehensive schoolwide sports curriculum. With a strong emphasis on soccer, the program also aspires to propel teams into the national league.

This initiative addresses misconceptions about health in Tanzania, where cultural beliefs around success and limited access to healthy food options contribute to challenges. Few affordable after-school sports activities further hinder children's engagement in sports. Your tasks include teaching basic health classes during free periods and leading sports activities in the afternoons, contributing to the development of a comprehensive sports program and curriculum.

Highridge School encompasses both primary and secondary students aged 7 to 18. Volunteers receive a structured schedule for free periods and sports activities, ensuring a well-organized and impactful experience. We seek positive and energetic volunteers aged 18 and above, with a keen interest in sports and exercise. Physical activity, a passion for teaching, and a clean criminal record are essential. Experience in sports or health-related fields is advantageous. Please submit a letter of motivation with your application to ensure the right fit for this impactful program.

A typical

Day in the Life

Each day on our Sports and Health Volunteer Program, you will start around 8 AM. Depart from the volunteer house and head to the nearby school for an engaging 2-3 hours of teaching basic health to children. Classes cover fundamental human body knowledge, diet essentials, and emphasize the importance of exercise. Receive a detailed schedule of free periods upon arrival, allowing you to prepare for your classes held in well-equipped classrooms with blackboards and chalk. We encourage creativity in your teaching methods!

Following health classes, share lunch with the children before diving into sports and exercise activities. Begin with the youngest children, offering training in football, basketball, or volleyball with all necessary equipment provided. Alternatively, design your own games and exercises to keep the children active. As the afternoon progresses, older children join in, following a detailed program provided by the school upon your arrival.

Work from Monday to Friday with the option for activities on Saturdays if desired. Your role extends beyond teaching, as you collaborate with school staff to enhance and expand the sports program.
